IT diploma or tech certificate? (Part 2)

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Another rather delicate situation for the degree/certification question is the following. For instance, you  have been working in a company for a while and is looking forward to being promoted. However, company policy requires a degree in order to be promoted up on the career ladder. That’s the pure reason, you should go back to school. On the other hand, if there is no formal policy and you still are not promoted, then the deal is not in the degree and maybe there is no point in wasting years and money to gain one. A solution may be to pursue a goal that could be achieved in a shorter time span to show your desire to better yourself. And that could take form in a certification.

The power of specificity

Such stories like the guy who had a Master degree in Computer Science couldn’t figure out a simple problem that anyone with an A+ cert could. At first they sound pretty funny. However, such situations are rather common, and the main issue is specificity of the sphere. Talking about such things, one should admit that as a rule holders of a diploma usually are taken as managers while certificate owners are more likely to be hired as specialists for certain tasks, not management.

Renewable knowledge

As it was said before, IT knowledge i.e. can become dated very quickly. Certifications is a good way to keep your knowledge “in shape”. Degrees can prepare a strong foundation for future knowledge, tactics , strategies and good ideas. Certificates can help to implement and merge your fundamental knowledge and latest technologies to solve the task as perfect as possible. So as you can see difference between IT degree and IT certificate is not that huge. However, they serve different aims and need different implementation in practice. And the answer to the age-old question of degrees vs. certifications is “it depends.” Depends on the specifics of the job, on the person doing the hiring, and on your capabilities in general.

IT diploma or tech certificate? (Part 1)

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

To be totally honest, it is really easier to answer the rhetoric question about chicken and egg, rather than give a practical advice on having a tech degree or certificate. Each situation is unique and absolutely personal. However, there are some common facts and issues, I’d like to share with you, that can help you to make a decision. However, these things are not intended to change your own position about IT diploma or certificate.

An essential issue to understand is that holding either a degree or a certificate in IT is not just an advantage mentioned in the CV. This is a sign that you are able to solve problems in most effective and efficient manner. At least this is what your potential employer will be waiting from you. That is why you should clearly understand why you need this education and what aims and goals you are going to achieve by gaining an IT degree or certificate.

But to be honest, IT is one of the most constantly changing industries. Having certifications will prove that you keep up with the latest technologies and are able to apply them in practice.

Why your resume is so important?

Sometimes an HR person or IT manager is the one looking at your resume, and as a rule they have lack of knowledge in some tech areas. That’s why it is essential to demonstrate how valuable your knowledge is by explaining some of the acronyms that will take their presence in the resume. On the other hand, if you happen to meet an HR person who is aware of all the tech hiring peculiarities, then again availability of diplomas and certifications might become some kind of a filter in order to sort out other irrelevant candidates.

The perception

When you are considering getting a degree, you always think about possible benefits it will bring and spheres of its application. IT degree is certainly a benefit for both personal and professional side of a individual’s life. For some employers this diploma might show that you have spent 4 years in order to gain it, which means you can start and successfully finish any task. Though education can be called as one of the hardest ones.

However, degrees and especially IT degrees can get out-of-date. That’s why certifications may renew your knowledge and show that you are aware of the latest trends in IT industry. So in 2 words, 10 years old degree in IT is not a strong argument for you being an excellent professional, a certification is.
